In
most homes the bathroom is the smallest and busiest room. Whether you have the
luxury of a private master bath or you share the hall bathroom with kids and
company, clutter can easily take over. It's amazing how many bottles of lotion
and tub toys and brushes one family can accumulate. Organizing your bathroom
may seem like a big job, but if you take it step by step you'll soon have a
bathroom that looks and functions better.
1. Pitch and Ditch -- Start by throwing away all expired medications, vitamins, sunscreen, makeup and bath and hair products. If the container doesn't provide an expiration date use this general guide: Liquids, including liquid makeup products, gels and creams have a shelf life of about 1 year. Powders and solids, like eye liner pencils, can last 2 to 3 years. If you can't remember when you bought that tube of lipstick, it's probably time to throw it out. While you're at it, get rid of that pile of old towels you don't use because they're too scratchy and anything else that's taking up valuable real estate in your bathroom but doesn't serve a purpose.

2. Get Vertical -- Since floor space is limited in most bathrooms, use vertical storage solutions instead. Install shelves on an empty wall or use an over-the-toilet shelf stand. If your budget allows, kitchen-style cupboards can be used in the bathroom to create maximum storage.
3. Hang It Up -- Removable-adhesive hooks are a quick and inexpensive answer to
many types of bathroom storage problems. Use them to hang a towel for each
member of the family, to store corded appliances like blow dryers and curling
irons or to keep necklaces and other accessories organized.

4. Basket Case -- Baskets are the perfect option for storing items you don't necessarily want everyone to see. Fill up a basket and stack it on a shelf for an easy designer look. For a kids' bathroom use color-coded baskets to stow everyone's favorite bath-time toys. A cool box or basket in a more grown-up style might encourage teens and tweens to keep their grooming supplies put away neatly.
5. Be a Clean Freak -- Who wants to spend the weekend cleaning the bathroom? Dedicating just 5 to ten minutes a day tidying up will save tons of time on weekly cleaning. Keep disinfectant wipes handy to clean away little messes whenever you pop in to use the bathroom anyway. If space allows, a laundry hamper in the bathroom means no excuse for dirty clothes or wet towels left on the floor.
