The Three Kitchen Trends You Need to Know for 2014

Pair black counters with lighter cabinets for a stunning contrast.

Your kitchen is the heart of your home: A place where memories are made one delicious meal at a time. For this reason, it is no surprise that the kitchen is also one of the most re-modeled parts of a home. When you update your kitchen you are increasing your home's value while improving your quality of life. And who doesn't want a little extra storage space or a new kitchen counter? If you know you want to change-up your kitchen, but you aren't sure how, these top trends for 2014 are an excellent place to start.

Black Counter-tops

If you want to add some sophistication to your home while making a statement, black counter-tops are the way to go. The best material to pull off this bold look is granite, but choose honed granite for a nice matte finish that is still dramatic but not as severe as the traditional polished look. To help lessen the severity of the color, you should pair it with lighter-colored cabinets, like grey or maple, for a stunning contrast. Not only will your kitchen look fashionable, but the granite is also very durable and will make cooking a little less stressful since it is scratch and crack resistant.

Darker paint tones and glass-front cabinets are the trend.

Darker Paint Tones

It's clear that the blacks, browns, and deep reds are definitely ruling the roost this year, and paint color is no exception. However, if you paint all of your walls with these stylish tones, you will make your space look smaller and dreary, which nobody wants. Instead, just choose one accent wall to paint with your dark color of choice. If you have the black counter-tops too, try to put the accent color on the opposite wall to help balance the weight of the dark hues. If you really want to step out of the box, put your blacks and browns on the floor or the ceiling.

Open or Glass-front Cabinets

To help even out the score from all the heavy color usage in your kitchen, you will want to introduce some light and airy glass-front cabinets. Or better yet, eliminate the doors altogether. This can be a really easy, affordable upgrade that can bring a level of sophistication to your kitchen. Once in place, you will be able to show off your dishes, cookbooks, and even your gourmet oils and spices. The only downside to this trend is that you will have to stay organized because everything will be visible to anyone that enters the room. But hey, it's a good excuse to get new dishes!
