4 Creative Ways to Decorate Your Pumpkin That Don't Involve a Knife

There are plenty of ways to spruce up your home with festive pumpkins besides carving!

The grimy, slimy mess, otherwise known as pumpkin carving, is most certainly not for everyone. Sure, it can be fun to get a little dirty sometimes, but there are a lot of other ways to get in the Halloween spirit without having to put forth so much effort. Not to mention, if you have small children, you are probably not going to want to drag out carving knives with them around. Have no fear; there are plenty of ways to spruce up your home with festive pumpkins besides carving them.

Bring on the Paint

You've heard it before, and you'll hear it again:
Paint is a great alternative to carving a pumpkin.  It is safe and easy for the kids (and you), and there are just as many creative options available to you that there are with carving. Plus, you can reuse the pumpkin to make some delicious pie once Halloween is over. Just make sure to choose water-based paint that is non-toxic. If you are having trouble making it stick to the pumpkin, try mixing a drop of natural dish detergent with two tablespoons of the paint to make it more adhesive.

Chalk it Up

Wouldn't it be so fun to change the look of your pumpkin every day? C'mon, you know it would be. Well, if you transform your pumpkin into a chalkboard that is exactly what you can do. Get some chalkboard paint and cover the pumpkin completely. Then, pick up some sidewalk chalk (get glow-in-the-dark for added fun) and let your creative juices start flowing. Note: This option is not for the procrastinator because it usually takes three days for the paint to dry once applied.

Get Crafty

With some glue and a variety of ribbons you can create decorative pumpkins that coordinate perfectly with your decor. Choose different textures, widths, colors, and patterns to make your finished design more interesting. You can even do something as simple as running the ribbon along the natural grooves of the pumpkin and tie a bow on top.

Slip it in Stockings

If you are really low on time, but you still want some pumpkins on display to show that you are not the Halloween Scrooge, pick up a few pairs of fishnet or similarly patterned stockings. Place the pumpkin in the leg hole, cut off the remaining stocking, and tie a piece of ribbon around the opening to close it off. The netted pumpkins give off an air of spookiness that paint just can't compete with.
